Description
Boston’s North End first began to take shape as a neighborhood in the mid-1600s. The North Square served as a main meeting point for the community, which harbored people from a variety of different backgrounds and professions. This waterfront neighborhood with cobblestone streets drew residents in and there was plenty of room for them. Commercial development began to take the North End by a storm in the 1800s, and the population began to boom as well. While wooden housing was popular when the neighborhood first took shape, large multi-story brick apartment buildings began to be built in the 1880s. These buildings helped support the growing population and need for housing, and many can still be seen today.
